The lights will shine at Relay For Life

June 8, 2012

Tonight is the Hutchinson County Relay For Life, and the lights will be shining in honor of cancer survivors and those who have lost the fight.
A special luminaria ceremony will be held during the RFL, set to take place tonight through Saturday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The ceremony will remember those lost to cancer and honors those who have battled and won.
The luminaria candle lighting to represent those individuals is set for dark on Friday evening.

Council approves SRO program agreement

The City of Borger plans to continue providing a school resource officer program for the Borger Independent School District.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Borger City Council approved an interlocal agreement between BISD and the City of Borger for the 2012/2013 School Resource Officer Program.
Eddie Edwards, Borger City Manager, said the school district and city have a long history of cooperation in regards to the SRO program.

Ernestine Pryor Jarnigan

ERNESTINE PRYOR JARNIGAN went to join our Lord and Savior in glory on June 4, 2012, in Houston Texas. She was born on March 25th 1931, to Ernest Elwood Pryor & Otherine Brashear of Borger, Texas. Ernestine (“Teeny” to her friends and family) was preceded in death by her loving husband, F.L. “Johnny” Jarnigan, parents, Ernest and Otherine, her brother Rex and wife Glema, their infant son Wesley, and her most beloved dog, Muffin. Ernestine leaves behind two sons, Steven L. Jarnigan and Randy Jarnigan, wife , Donna of Houston, two grand-daughters, Jennifer J. Bolden and Mandi M.

Land annexation for new Wal-Mart almost complete

The land annexation for a new Wal-Mart Supercenter in Borger is close to completion.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Borger City Council acted to introduce an ordinance that will annex a 16.361 acre tract of land in Section 23, Block Y, Arnold and Barrett-Morris & Cummings Survey.
The final reading of this ordinance will take place at the council’s next regular meeting, set for June 19.
The council also acted to approve the rezoning of the entire tract of land, which is 19.773 acres, from estate agricultural to commercial.

HCHM welcomes new volunteer

The Hutchinson County Historical Museum welcomes a new volunteer.
Sandra Hilbert is the newest volunteer at the museum.
Hilbert has been a part of the museum for many years and is now working at the front desk greeting visitors and helping to label artifacts on Mondays.
Born and raised in Borger, Sandra, her husband Harvey, their son Mark and daughter Christy were all born at North Plains Hospital in July.
Hilbert grew up in Borger and her husband grew up in Phillips. They met at Frank Phillips College, where she later graduated from and serves on the Board of Regents.

RFL reflects a “fight back” attitude

With the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Hutchinson County just around the corner, participants are going into the event with a “fight back” attitude.
This “celebration of life” brings the community together in an effort to fight cancer and symbolizes the fight that patients face after they are diagnosed with the disease.
RFL is an overnight team effort to raise funds for American Cancer Society’s programs and services. According to Cathy Phillips, RFL co-chair for Hutchinson County, cancer does not stop when the sun goes down.

Ribera to take over Lubbock High baseball program

On Tuesday afternoon, Borger ISD Superintendent Chance Welch informed the Borger News Herald that Steve Ribera is resigning as the head baseball coach at Borger High School in order to take a similar position at Lubbock High School.
Ribera just finished his second season leading the Bulldogs, where the team won the District 1-3A title and reached the 3A Regional Quarterfinals in 2011 and qualified for post-season play in 2012 by finishing in second place in District 1-3A.
Ribera replaces Freddie Tobias, who resigned on May 14 after six seasons with the Westerners.

Georgia Irene Harp

FRITCH - Georgia Irene Harp, 86, died June 4, 2012 in Amarillo.
Graveside Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 7, 2012 at the Stinnett Cemetery, with Rev. Leonard Forsythe officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch.
Mrs. Harp was born October 21, 1925 in Muskogee, OK, to Solomon David Harris and Bertha (Jones) Harris. She married Asker Harp on March 8, 1946 in Arkansas. Georgia was a housewife and was a longtime resident of Fritch.
