Council to swear in new member

May 14, 2012

The Borger City Council will be swearing in a new member at its upcoming meeting.
The meeting is set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2012, in the city council chambers of Borger City Hall, 600 North Main.
The council will act on a resolution canvassing the returns and declaring results of a city officer’s election. It will also act to recognize Leon DeWeese for his six years of service as a council member, as well as the years given in service as a city employee.

Blood drive scheduled for June 7

Feel the power of saving a life on June 7th by donating your blood to the Coffee Memorial Blood Center.
Coffee Memorial Blood Center will have staff on hand for local residents to give blood from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 7th, at the Union Hall, located at 111 East Coolidge.
A photo ID or donor card is required to donate, and donors must be at least 17 years of age to be eligible to give blood.

Votes in for council elections in Borger and Stinnett

The votes are in for the Borger and Stinnett City Council elections, and the people have spoken.
According to an unofficial vote tally, Brandy Callahan will be the newest member of the Borger City Council. She will be filling Place One on the council, which is being vacated by current council member Leon DeWeese, who did not run for reelection.
Callahan received 241 votes in the election over challenger Willy Adams, who received 195. She will be sworn in to the council at its upcoming meeting Tuesday.

Lee Walton “Walt” Poling

FRITCH - Lee Walton “Walt” Poling, 79, of Poling Ranch in Fritch, died Thursday, May 10, 2012.
Services for Mr. Poling will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 14, in the First Southern Baptist Church in Fritch with the Rev. Calvin Winters officiating. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch.

Paul McKinney

Paul McKinney, 95, of Borger died Wednesday May 9, 2012 at the Texas State Veteran’s Home in Amarillo.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday May 14 at Minton Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jim Howard of Amarillo officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Early voting begins in primary election

The time to begin voting in the primary election has finally arrived!
Early voting in the primary election begins May 14 and will run through May 25. Voting hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Designated early voting places are as follows:
*Hutchinson County Annex Building, 500 Main, Stinnett
*Hutchinson County Annex, 1400 Veta, Borger
*Fritch Library Community Room, 205 North Cornell, Fritch
The last day to apply for a ballot by mail (received, not postmarked) is May 22, 2012.

Officials bust alleged drug ring

Law enforcement agencies this week busted an alleged Amarillo, Dumas and Borger drug ring with ties to the metroplex.
The DEA, FBI and panhandle law enforcement agencies assisted in a drug bust at several homes and businesses in those towns.
As of Thursday, May 10, nine people have been arrested and others may be arrested in the future.
Five homes in Dumas were searched and homes in Amarillo and Borger were investigated as part of the operation.
According to Kathy Colvin of the United States Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Texas, nothing has been publicly filed yet.

Election time is here!

The time to elect members to the Borger and Stinnett City Councils is officially here.
Election Day is set for tomorrow, May 12. Borger residents will be electing a new citizen to represent the Borger City Council in Place One as current council member Leon DeWeese is stepping down. Seeking the spot are businesswoman Brandy Callahan and Eternal Light Church Pastor William Adams.

Officials respond to Wednesday collision

A minivan and motorcycle were involved in a collision Wednesday.
Officers and EMS were called out to the 1100 block of of S. Cedar around 5 p.m. on May 9 to assist two victims involved in a crash.
Driving a gray Chevrolet Venture Mini Van, James Lacefield, 64, failed to yield the right-of- way when Jody Holt, 31, driving a black Suzuki motorcycle and traveling at an unsafe speed, crashed into the van, according to Lt. Anthony Griffin of the Borger Police Department.

West Texas High’s Coleman competing in State Track Meet

May 10, 2012

West Texas High Comanche Senior Colin Coleman will set his sights on medaling this weekend, in the State Track Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas at Austin. Coleman has been sitting among the area’s best on the Amarillo Globe News Track Honor Roll for most of the track season. Colin is a long jumper for the Comanches, and he was also a running back on the varsity football team.
