RFL activities in full swing

With the Hutchinson County Relay For Life less than a month away, activities surrounding the event are in full swing!
On Saturday, May 19, the Bread of Life Ministries Kingdom Racers will have a barbecue fundraiser at the Borger Wal-Mart from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The St. Andrew United Methodist Church “Heavenly” Cookies Team will be holding a “Bowl-A-Rama” fundraiser from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, May 20. The event will be held at Wildcatter’s, 1501 South Main.

Bulldogs take their game to the next level

On Wednesday afternoon, a soccer commitment reception was held for Borger High School Soccer players Francisco “Paco” Ibarra, George Sifuentes, and Kaleen Dean.
While Ibarra has yet to announce where he will play after high school Sifuentes will join the Crusaders soccer team at the University of Dallas, while Dean will head to South Texas to play for the Schreiner University Mountaineers in Kerrville.
Both Sifuentes and Dean said their decisions were based on finding a good fit and a great opportunity to play soccer while receiving an education.

Comanches earn All-District Baseball honors

Four West Texas High Comanches baseball players earned District 6-1A All-District honors for their play on the baseball diamond during the 2012 season. The Comanches were 10-13 overall, 6-4 in district play. Booker and Claude each had five players earn All-District honors.

Myrtie Ethel Seeds Harris

Myrtie Ethel Seeds Harris was born May 2, 1914 at home in Ringgold, Montague County TX. She was married to Nolan Harris July 2, 1933 in Pampa, Texas. They had been married 50 years when Nolan passed away in Borger, Texas, October 28, 1983.
She was also preceded in death by her mother, Jewel Seeds Castleberry of Pampa, Texas, father Rob Seeds of Pampa, Texas; sister Mary Elizabeth Seeds Trenary of Pensacola, Florida; two brothers, Robert Seeds of Donaldsonville, Louisiana; and Charles A Seeds, Dallas, Texas.

HCSO hosting “Take 25 event” Friday and Saturday

The Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office is doing its part to ensure the safety of children across the area.
The office, in partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, will observe National Missing Children’s Day this year with participation in the national Take 25 child safety campaign. A child ID program will be held from 2-8 p.m. May 18 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 19 at the Borger Wal-Mart.

Fritch council holds meeting

Numerous citizens gathered at the Fritch City Annex to attend the Fritch City Council meeting on Tuesday.
Council members gave awards to members of the Fritch Police Department and EMS for their efforts and skills put toward a vehicle accident. Members awarded from EMS were Matthew McKinney, Cassandra Vann, Bobby Lamb, and Shannon Lamb. Fritch policemen Cade Turner and Russell Radney were also given awards.

Wal-Mart gives back to Children’s Miracle Network

The local Wal-Mart is doing its part to help the Children’s Miracle Network.
On Friday, April 20, employees from the Borger Wal-Mart attended the CMN Kickoff Luncheon, held at Baptist/St. Anthony’s Hospital in Amarillo. At that time, the employees presented CMN with a check for $23,000.

May 16, 2012

Joy Stephen, 74, of Phoenix, AZ, passed away, Monday, May 7, 2012.
Joy LaTrice (McWhorter) Stephen was born Tuesday, July 6, 1937 in Pampa, TX to Fred and Bessie (Gatlin) McWhorter. Joy McWhorter married Truman Royce Stephen on October 22, 1952 in Edmonson, TX.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Truman Royce Stephen; her grandson, Bobby J. Stephen; her sister Geraldine Hancock and her brother, Bobby McWhorter.

It’s National Women’s Health Week at Curves!

Celebrate women’s health at Curves during National Women’s Health Week, which is happening this week, May 13-19.
Curves of Borger is giving a free 30-day membership to any non-member who visits the club during regular hours throughout this week for National Women’s Health Week. Curves also presents the inaugural National Curves Day celebration, which will be Thursday, May 17, 2012.

Borger City Council honors DeWeese, swears in new member

The Borger City Council took time to honor a longtime City of Borger employee and city council member and swear in a new member at its regular meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
Leon DeWeese was honored for his longtime service to the City of Borger. He came to work for the city at the age of 16 in 1959. He worked in several capacities for the city, including as a lifeguard, health inspector, Director of Municipal Services, Director of Parks and Recreation, and Municipal Court Judge. He retired from the City of Borger in August of 2003.
