Borger’s Head Volleyball and Girls Basketball positions come open

This past week, the Borger High School Head Volleyball and Girls Basketball positions became open.
On Wednesday Jason Carter informed the volleyball players that he is leaving Borger to take a principal position within the Roby Consolidated School District, which is near Sweetwater.
In December, Carter was promoted to the head volleyball coaching position after spending several years coaching and teaching in the Borger school district, including serving as an assistant volleyball coach under Cara Adams and Michael Littlejohn.

2011-12 Borger News Herald Male Athlete of the Year

From hitting clutch jump shots to scoring touchdowns, West Texas High School senior Alex Ramirez did a little bit of everything during the 2011-12 school year.
The people in Stinnett and 1A schools in the Texas Panhandle have known how good of an athlete Ramirez has been for the past three years, especially on the basketball court.
Ramirez has been named the District 1-1A Offensive MVP three years in a row, which includes the senior averaging 18.4 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 4.4 APG, and 2.1 SPG this past season.

2011-12 Borger News Herald Female Athlete of the Year

West Texas High senior Abby Summers was selected as the 2011-12 Borger News Herald’s Female Athlete of the Year due to academic and athletic success in volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis and cheerleading during her senior year.
Competing in sports has always been a big part of Summer’s life, with the senior commenting, “Due to having a dad who is a coach, I have always been busy playing sports or having him working with me to get better.”

2011-12 Borger News Herald Coach of the Year

Sanford-Fritch High School Girl’s Basketball Coach Jason Hale was named the 2011-12 Borger News Herald Coach of the Year for leading the Lady Eagles to a 20-win season and a second place finish in District 1-2A.
Hale is finishing his seventh year as a coach, which includes stops at Spade and Springlake-Earth before coming to Sanford-Fritch three years ago. Hale spent one year leading the Sanford-Fritch varsity boys before taking over the Lady Eagles head coaching position prior to the 2010-11 season.

FPC Board of Regents to meet on Monday

On Monday afternoon, the Frank Phillips College Board of Regents will hold it’s May regularly scheduled meeting.
Items on the agenda include the swearing in of new board members, the election of new officers, a report regarding 2011-12 classes by Michelle Stevens, and taking action on a grant received from Round 6 Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) and a donation from ConocoPhillips.
Reports will also be given by the FPC Administration.
The FPC Board of Regents will meet in the Board of Regents Meeting Room, located on the second floor of the Library, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Land annexation for new Wal-Mart progressing

The land annexation for a new Wal-Mart is progressing.
The Borger City Council held two public hearings earlier this week on the annexation of land for a proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter. The land is a 19.773 acre tract in Section 23, Block Y, Arnold & Barrett-Morris & Cummings Survey, Hutchinson County. There were no comments heard at either hearing.

First Nazarene Church of Borger to offer free sports camp

The First Nazarene Church of Borger is planning to offer a free mega sports camp this summer, titled “Beyond the Gold,” to help kids 5-12 years old to learn more about sports.
First Nazarene Church Pastor Terry Porter said, “We want to give kids a chance to learn more about sports, discover character building concepts and have a whole lot of fun, all for free.”
Former Borger Bulldog player and Claude Head Baseball Coach Matt Green will be the camp’s Baseball Head Coach and Borger Bulldog Cheerleader Southern Shira will be the camp’s Cheerleading Coach.

Paul Edward Pinter

Paul Edward Pinter, 74, of Amarillo died on Sunday, May 13, 2012.
No services are scheduled. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mr. Pinter was born on July 6, 1937 in Abbott, Texas to Alfons and Sydney Pinter. He graduated from Abbott High School in 1955 and then attended North Texas State University.

Loyd Elmer Gooch

Loyd Elmer Gooch, 86, of Borger, passed away, Thursday, May 16, 2012.
Loyd Elmer Gooch was born on April 12, 1926 in Logan County, Oklahoma to Corbett Roy Gooch and Minnie Rose (Schnaeburger) Gooch. Mr. Gooch worked for Phillips Petroleum Company as a welding supervisor. He was a member of Keeler Baptist church where he served as a deacon. Mr. Gooch was a WWII Veteran and also involved in the Korean conflict. Mr. Gooch was instrumental in building the ball park for the North Little League, where he coached the team. Loyd Gooch married Darlis Reynolds on May 5, 1942 in Enid, Oklahoma.

BFD responds to Thursday house fire

Borger firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire early Thursday morning.
At 6:55 a.m. yesterday, a house caught fire on the 700 block of Sixth Street.
According to Fire Chief Bob Watson of the Borger Fire Department, the fire was caused by a lit candle that was left unattended in the home’s bathroom.
“The inside of the house was pretty much all ruined,” he said.
Ten firefighters arrived at the scene with two trucks and contained the fire within 30 minutes.
No injuries were reported. Firefighters left the scene at 8:30 a.m.
