Longtime Borger Coach Hunt inducted into TABC Hall of Fame

This past Saturday, former longtime Borger High School Boys Basketball Head Coach Duane Hunt was honored as part of the 2012 class entering the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame banquet ceremony took place in San Antonio, during the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) clinic.
Hunt spent 23 seasons coaching the Bulldogs where he had a 507-206 record, which included two state runner-up finishes in the late 1970’s. During his 26-year coaching career he took three teams to the state tournament and had a 548-236 overall record.

Francisca Rascon

Francisca Rascon, 58, of Amarillo died Sunday, May 20, 2012 in Amarillo.
Services will be at 11:00 am Wednesday at the Bethesda Outreach Center, 1101 Fritch Highway with Alejandro Rodarte of Trinity Fellowship Church officiating. Interment will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St.
Mrs. Rascon was born in Coahuila, Mexico. She moved to Amarillo in 2002 from Borger.
She worked as a volunteer at the Bethesda Outreach Center for several years. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Clyde Ferguson, Jr.

PAMPA – Clyde Ferguson, Jr., 83, died May 21, 2012, in Ardmore, Okla.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel, with Dr. Ed Barker of Lighthouse Covenant Fellowship, officiating.
Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
Mr. Ferguson was born October 30, 1928 in Fort Smith, Arkansas where he attended schools. He started driving a truck at the age of 16, retiring after nearly 54 years. He was a great father, brother and uncle who touched many lives. He will be greatly missed.

Charlene J. Rowe

Charlene J. Rowe, 76, of Borger, died Monday May 21, 2012, in Borger.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Friday May 25, 2012, at Minton Memorial Chapel with Kenneth Thames of Arizona officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Sunset at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. Family visitation will be Thursday May 24th at Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Borger High School names top two graduates

Borger High School has named its top two graduates for the Class of 2012.
Abbie Madden is this year’s valedictorian with a weighted GPA of 106.7857, and Rachel Thompson has been named the salutatorian with a weighted GPA of 106.2291.
Madden has had an active career during her years at BHS. She was on the varsity tennis team all four years of her high school career and served as team captain for one year.

Mr. Treats says goodbye

After 55 years of satisfying Borger’s sweet tooth, Mr. Treats is closing shop.
Since 1957, Mr. Treats Donut Shop has seen several hundred citizens walk through its doors on a daily basis.
According to the owner Teresa Bellow, Mr. Treats will shut its doors for good this Friday, May 25, 2012.

HCSO responds to disturbance in Fritch

May 23, 2012

A disturbance occurred within the late hours of Monday night in Fritch, and shots were fired.
According to Chief Deputy James Qualls of the Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office, there was a outside disturbance involving three individuals around 8 p.m. on Monday night in the Pawnee and Goodnight area.
Brent Dickinson, 38, of Fritch attempted to open fire. No injuries were reported.
On scene was the Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office, National Park Service, and Fritch Police Department. Dickinson was arrested for deadly conduct. All officials left the scene at 9:30 p.m.

Young and Day promoted within the Borger Athletic Department

On Tuesday evening, the Borger ISD School Board unanimously approved the hiring of Leslie Young as the new Borger ISD Athletic Director and James Day as the new Borger Bulldogs Head Football Coach.

Swim lessons will be available June 4-July 27

Swimming lessons for children should be something provided to children regardless of their age. Swimming is an activity that is loved by all children, and when they participate in this sport they are gaining a number of benefits. This is why children should have swimming lessons if they can not swim- mostly for safety purposes, but also recreational.
This year Susie Graves, Alicia Hardin, and Kayla Yeager will teach children from ages four and up.

Memorial Day ceremonies set

May 22, 2012

The American Legion, VFW, and the Elks Lodge will be holding Memorial Day Ceremonies on May 28, 2012 in honor of the fallen and those who are still fighting for our freedom today.
Services will start at 9 a.m in the Westlawn Cemetery,and will then travel to three different cemeteries including Highland Park at 10 a.m., Stinnett Cemetery at 11 a.m., and Lieb Cemetery at noon.
After the services, there will be a dinner served at the Morse Community Center. Citizens are welcomed to bring a covered dish. For more information call Jose Martinez at 878-3987.
