Sandra Kay Sowell Rodgers

Sandra Kay Sowell Rodgers, formerly of Borger, passed away May 19, 2012 in Georgetown, TX.
She was born April 24, 1938 to JB and Minilee Sowell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe Dell Rodgers and daughter Abby Rodgers Hamilton.
She is survived by one son Jody and his wife, Karen, of Leander, TX and one sister, Wynell Sowell Farrish of Fayetteville, AR and two brother-in-laws, Chick and Troy Rodgers, and nieces and nephews.
No services are planned at this time.
Donations may be made to Scott & White Hospice, 2401 S. 31st St, Temple, TX 76508 in Sandra’s name.

AMARILLO – Shannon Pool, 36, passed away May 23, 2012.
Memorial Service will be 11:00 am Saturday, May 26, 2012, at Cox Funeral Home Benton Chapel.
Shannon was born in Plainview on November 14, 1975. She loved her children and her dogs.

Stay safe this Memorial Day weekend

As families across the country get ready to kick off the summer and honor our military heroes this Memorial Day weekend, local officials urge motorists to stay safe on the road during a time of year when drunk driving deaths typically increase.
Over Memorial Day weekend in 2011, 158 people were killed in drunk driving crashes nationwide.
A tip for safe driving over the holiday weekend and year-round is to plan a safe way home.

Luminarias available for Relay For Life

The time has come to purchase luminarias for this year’s Hutchinson County Relay For Life event.
Citizens are encouraged to honor a friend or loved one who is fighting a battle with cancer or remember someone who is lost with a American Cancer Society RFL of Hutchinson County Luminaria.
Luminarias may be purchased for a donation and will be featured in a special ceremony during Relay 2012, set for June 8 and 9, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., at Huber Park in Borger.

Give a home to an animal that needs it

Every forgotten animal needs a good place to call home and someone to call family.
Coming up on Monday, June 2, 2012, Borger Animal Control and Troop 31 BSA will host “All Pets in the Panhandle” as an Eagle Scout Project.
This event will take place in front of Wal-Mart in Borger.
Also, the North Shore Adoption Bus – associated with North Shore Animal League and National Dog Mill Rescue - will be on hand.

This Saturday, movie action stars Ernie Reyes Jr. and Carmichael Simon will be making an appearance at American Karate Studios from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

David Clive Isom, Jr.

David Clive Isom, Jr, age 46, lost his life on January 5, 2012, after being struck by a truck while he and his wife Anna were riding their bicycles. David was an avid cyclist and a true advocate for following safe bicycle practices. As a result of this tragedy, his family is hopeful that all motorists will strive to be more aware and respectful of cyclists.
David was born and raised in Amarillo, Texas. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1983 and attended Amarillo College where he studied commercial electronics.

West Texas High School names top two graduates

West Texas High School has named its top two graduates for the Class of 2012.
Matthew Goodale is this year’s valedictorian with a 101.89/4.0 GPA, and Sarah Kelly has been named salutatorian with a 101.28/4.0 GPA.
Goodale is the son of George and Dallas Goodale. He has taken honors courses in English I, II, III, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Government, and Economics. He has also taken dual credit courses in English IV, Chemistry, and U.S. History.

Facebook post honoring fallen soldier creates buzz

Hannah Hobbs, an employee of Bennigan's in Borger, recently served a guest who ordered a beer for his friend who was a fallen comrade.
The beer was intended to be a memorial to Navy Lt. J.G. Francis Toner IV. The guest left a note with the beer that read “In memory of Lt. J.G. Francis Toner, USN. Killed in action 27 March 2009, Balkh Province, Afghanistan. ‘Non sibi said patriae’ NOT FORGOTTEN!”

Taylor pleads guilty to one count

A resident of Borger pled guilty on Tuesday for possessing child pornography.
According to court records, James Bradley Taylor pleaded guilty to one of three child porn charges for a plea bargain.
The other two felony charges for receiving and attempting to receive the materials were dropped.
According to the plea agreement, Taylor installed Frostwire, a file sharing program, on a personal computer, which he used to download the child pornography in the month of March.
