Adams seeking election to Borger City Council

William “Willy” Adams is seeking election to Borger City Council, Place One.
Adams was born in Marion, Miss., and has been a resident of Texas for the past 62 years, with the exception of seven years in which he lived in Oklahoma and New Mexico.
His parents moved to West Texas when he was quite young and settled in Slaton, a small farming community southeast of Lubbock some 15 miles. It was there that Adams graduated from high school in 1957 and met and married his wife of 54 years, Pauline.

Richie Alan Eakins

Richie Alan Eakins, 40, joined the angels in Heaven on Wednesday, May 2, 2012.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2012 at Eternal Light Church with Pastor Willy Adams officiating. Interment will follow in the “Garden Of Hope” at Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Richie always saw the beauty in people just as God sees the beauty in all of us. He went to Borger High School and worked at Spradling Drilling Company for many years until he became ill.

Olen Holliman

Olen Holliman, 80, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012, in Amarillo.
Memorial Services will be at 10:00 AM Saturday at Lighthouse Baptist Church, 5631 Pavillard Dr. with Rev. Danny Lucas, pastor, and Gerald Owens, assoc. pastor, officiating. Cremation and arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St.
Mr. Holliman was born in Roff, OK. He moved to Borger in 1949. He enlisted in the Navy in 1953. He was honorably discharged in 1956 as a Seaman after injuries he received during his service. He returned to Borger after being discharged from the Navy.

Kids’ Day event to be celebrated in Borger this Saturday

Community Wide Kids’ Day, or El Día de los Niños, is the latest gift from the Latino community to mainstream US culture.
Día de los Niños (Children’s Day) is celebrated in many countries throughout Latin America and the world. The United States has holidays for mothers, fathers, grandparents, teachers and a host of other adults, but no day set aside for the appreciation of children.
The church Iglesia Bautista Hispana is planning a Borger National Kids’ Day event for Saturday, May 5, 2012, from 10 a.m. 3 p.m. at Huber Park. There will be games, prizes, piñatas, air rides and food.

Fritch officials sign wildfire protection plan

The City of Fritch is doing its part to safeguard its citizens against wildfires.
City officials signed a County Wildfire Protection Plan during a special ceremony Thursday.
According to Joe Kozlowski, Wildland Urban Interface Specialist for the Texas Forest Service, the CWPP enables a community to plan how it will cut the risk of wildfire.
This plan also identifies strategic sites and methods for fuel reduction projects across the landscape and jurisdictional boundaries.
Benefits of having a CWPP include National Fire Plan funding priority for projects identified in a CWPP.

National Day of Prayer observed in Borger

May 4, 2012

Thursday was truly a day of prayer in Borger.
Various citizens from across the area came out to Huber Park Thursday afternoon for the 61st observance of the National Day of Prayer.
The theme of this year’s observance was “One Nation Under God” and the theme verse was Psalm 33:12, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” The honorary chairman for this year was Christian speaker David Jeremiah.

Lobos walk to a game one win over the Bulldogs

On Thursday evening, the Levelland Lobos took advantage of seven walks leading to 10 runs in the sixth inning, on their way to defeating the Borger Bulldogs 16-5 in game one of the 3A Bi-District Playoff best-of-three series.
Control issues plagued the Bulldog pitchers all evening as three pitchers combined to give up 12 walks and hit three batters through six innings of work.
Despite control issues and four errors, the Bulldogs were in position to get a late inning win by only trailing by one run, 5-6, after the fifth inning.

Lockney takes care of Comanches in game 1 of Bi-District playoff

West Texas High took on the Lockney Longhorns Thursday night at West Texas A&M in game one of the best two out of three series. Things did not go the way of the Comanches as they committed 5 errors, left eight base runners stranded, and their hitters struck out 11 times, in a 13-2 loss. Carlos Juarez was the losing pitcher for WT. Juarez is WT’s go to pitcher but he left the game in the middle of the third inning. Juarez allowed 10 runs, six of them unearned. He struck out three batters. Alex Ramirez pitched one and a half innings. He allowed three runs and struck out two.

FPC Lady Plainsmen add post player from Highland Park

The Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen Women’s Basketball team has signed Sharley Hale, a 6-0 forward from Amarillo Highland Park.
On why she picked Frank Phillips College, Hale commented, “The reason that I have chosen Frank Phillips is because it’s very close to home. The coach and the girls were very welcoming and heart warming.” Hale added, “When I first began playing basketball, I always had this dream in the back of mind to go play basketball at Frank Phillips. Now that I have signed my letter of intent I can officially say that I have fulfilled that dream in life.”

Muriel Margaret White, 94, died Tuesday May 1 at St. Ann’s Nursing Home in Panhandle.
Rosary will said at 6:00 p.m. Friday at Minton Memorial Chapel and Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Borger with Msgr. Michael Colwell officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
