FPC Lady Plainsmen earn All-Conference honors

Two Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen softball players received All-Conference honors this week for their play during the 2012 season.
FPC freshman infielder Lucinda Ponce was named First Team All-Conference and All-Region after hitting .404 with 15 doubles and 10 home runs with 36 RBIs.
FPC sophomore outfielder Janelle Smith was named to the Honorable Mention All-Conference team. Smith had a .354 batting average with eight doubles, and three home runs with 33 RBIs.

Plainsmen basketball team will have several familiar faces

One of the things that separates junior college athletics from what can be found at universities is the high amount of turnaround teams tend to see from one year to the next. In recent years, the high turnover trend was alive and well in the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen Men’s Basketball program where having just two or three players turning from the previous season seemed to be the norm.
However, the Plainsmen appear to be breaking the trend, as eight players have signed letter of intents to return to Frank Phillips College, including all five starters from the 2011-12 squad.

Evelyn Brians Wiseman

Evelyn Brians Wiseman was born to Robert Thomas Brians and Maggie Smart Brians on September 11, 1916 in Bonham, Texas. She died on May 7th, 2012, in Spearman, Texas, at the age of 95.
Evelyn was married to Paul Wiseman of Charleston, West Virginia, on November 17, 1937, in Borger, Texas. They were the parents of three children, Sonja Janice, Ronald Glenn, and Mark Gregory. The family resided in Borger until 1960 when they were transferred to Houston, Texas, with United Carbon/Ashland Oil.

Margaret (Marge) Lucille Papay

Margaret (Marge) Lucille Papay, 87, of Morse died Sunday May 6, 2012, in Amarillo.
Services will be held 11:00 am Thursday, May 10, at the First Baptist Church in Morse, where she was a member, with Pastor Gary Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Lieb Cementary by Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Marge was born August 22, 1924 on a farm 9 miles southeast of Elkhart KS in Texas County OK to Dewey and Gladys Hensley. Living on the farm until the family moved into Elkhart in 1929. She graduated from Elkhart High School in May, 1942.

Opportunities, Inc. celebrating 45 years

Borger’s local senior citizens center is celebrating 45 years of operation.
Opportunities, Inc., located at 930 Illinois, will celebrate this special milestone this Thursday with a reception from 1-4 p.m. Cake and other refreshments will be served, and the community is invited to come and celebrate.
The center is a non-profit organization of Borger individuals who operate a combination community and senior citizen center.

City of Borger encouraging citizens to conserve water

The Borger Municipal Water System has experienced an average increase in consumption of approximately 10 to 15 percent in previous years. Conditions are appropriate to raise citizen awareness and increase water conservation efforts.

BISD board to meet Thursday

May 9, 2012

The Borger Independent School District Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow evening in the board room at the BISD Administration Building, 200 East Ninth.
Personnel matters will be discussed, which include resignations, the superintendent’s recommendations regarding employment, and substitutes to review.
