Madden and Whitworth win District 1-3A Mixed Doubles title

After winning the 3A state title in Mixed Doubles last year with her brother Josh, Borger High School senior Abbie Madden is proving how big a role she played on that title team by winning her second District 1-3A Mixed Doubles title with teammate Alix Whitworth at the District 1-3A Tennis Tournament in Pampa on Tuesday.
The Madden/Whitworth team will next try to bring Borger its second Regional Mixed Doubles title in a row next week at the 3A Region I Tennis Tournament at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

An Evening of Hail

On Wednesday, Hutchinson County saw its first major supercell thunderstorm in nearly two years, producing several funnel clouds, golfball sized hail, and five inches of rain in the Fritch area.
According to Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards, the storm started forming south of the Fritch area at around 2:30 p.m. where he remained stationary for several hours.
The lack of movement in the storm led to part of Fritch reporting five inches of rain and caused to Highway 136 between Fritch and Amarillo to be closed for one hour, at around 7:30 p.m. due to flooding.

Borger Trash Bash seeing great success

The Borger Trash Bash is underway, and citizens have been stepping up to the plate.
According to reports thus far, as of 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, 26.5 tons of trash have been dumped since the start of the event on Monday. There have also been a large number of tires disposed of as well.
Through Saturday, county residents can bring their trash to the transfer station to be disposed of for free. Tire disposal is also an available service during Trash Bash Week.

Thomas Leon Edmonds

Thomas Leon Edmonds, passed away Friday, April 6, 2012 in Amarillo,Texas.
Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Borger, Texas, on Thursday, April 12 at 2:00PM. Funeral arrangements are by Brown Funeral Directors of Borger, TX.
Tom was born on May 10, 1932 in Borger, Texas to Flora Love and Cline Azel Edmonds. He grew up in the Gulf Camp and graduated Valedictorian from Borger High School.

Wanda Adkins

Wanda Adkins, 87, of Borger, passed away, Sunday, April 8, 2012.
Wanda Lee (Rawls) Adkins was born Monday, November 24, 1924 in Hale Center, TX to James and Mattie (King) Rawls.
She married Eddie Douglas Adkins on May 30, 1948 in Lubbock, TX.
Wanda was very active in her churches, First Baptist Phillips and First Baptist Borger, as WMU President, GA Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Training Union Teacher and went on mission trips with the church.

Mona Marie Eshbach

Mona Marie Eshbach, 89, of Borger died Monday April 9th at Amarillo, Texas. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Jake Minton officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Sunset at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Borger – Kenneth Leon Shira, 74, died Monday, April 9, 2012.
Services will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 12, 2012 at First Church of the Nazarene in Borger, with Pastor Terry Porter officiating. Graveside services will be 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Fairview Cemetery in Memphis, Tx are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Mr. Shira worked for many years at Pioneer Natural Gas as an operator.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Sue; two sons, Brent Lee Shira of Panhandle and Bobby Lynn Shira of Ft. Worth; one sister Betty Ellen Lee of Andrews; and 3 Grandchildren.

Coker yet to issue statement on dismissal

The recently dismissed Fritch Chief of Police has yet to issue a statement pertaining to his Monday dismissal.
Kirk Coker, who was dismissed from the position on Monday, told the Borger News-Herald that he has to consult with his attorney before making any type of statement.
He promised to keep the BNH updated with any possible news.
Monte Leggett, Chief Administrator for the Fritch Police Department, confirmed on Monday afternoon that Coker was no longer with the Fritch Police Department.

Assistance needed in copper theft cases

Crime Stoppers and the Borger Police Department are seeking assistance in reference to copper wire thefts that occurred inside the City of Borger.
On Monday, March 19, 2012, officers from Borger PD responded to a burglary in the 300 block of East Tenth Street.
During this burglary, the suspect (s) took several types of copper wiring from the location. The suspect (s) also caused damage to the location while taking the copper wiring.
