Browns: Don’t drive under the influence of your social life

Why would a wrecked pickup truck be pulled around the country with bumper stickers that read B.U.S.T (Buckle-Up, Stop Texting) or TXT & DRVNG - KLLER IDEA?
The R.A.B.. (Remember Alex Brown Foundation) is being promoted nationwide by her parents and sister. Johnny Mac, Jeanne Brown and their younger daughter Katrina delivered a heart-wrenching presentation to the public Thursday afternoon at Frank Phillips College.
The Brown Family, from Wellman, Texas, near Brownfield, have been featured on Extreme Makeover Home Edition, and the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Clarendon takes first two in series with Frank Phillips

On Friday afternoon, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen plan to climb up the WJCAC baseball standings hit a snag, as the Clarendon College Bulldogs won both games of the Friday doubleheader, 8-6 and 8-3.

Game one started promising for the home team, as the Plainsmen scored six runs off of seven hits. But the Bulldogs chipped away at the lead the final five innings for the comeback win.

Comanches fall apart late, lose to Shamrock

West Texas High was sitting in third place alone in the District standings Friday, but after a 17-12 loss to the Irish in Stinnett yesterday, things are looking messy. It was a one point game until the top of the sixth, when things went bad for WT. They were trailing 8-7 when Alex Ramirez walked 2, hit 2, and the Irish also banged out four hits to take a 16-7 lead the Comanches couldn’t overcome.

Borger man involved in tractor accident

On Friday, local citizen Tommy Hooper was involved in a tractor accident.
Borger emergency crews responded to the call on April 13, 2012 at 5:10 p.m. on the 200 block of Evergreen.
According to Fire Marshal Jerry Langwell, he was attempting to pull a tree stump out of the ground when the tractor flipped over and landed on top of him. Emergency crews worked close to 30 minutes to lift the tractor and free Hooper, before he was transported by Lifestar to an Amarillo hospital. Hooper suffered a broken arm and body trauma in the accident, but is reportedly in stable condition.

Volunteers needed for Day of Caring

Volunteers are needed for the upcoming United Way Day of Caring.
This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, April 28. Activities will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Huber Park with coffee and breakfast. Teams will depart at 8 a.m. to begin work on their designated projects.
Teri Hogue, who works with the Hutchinson County United Way, said the Day of Caring is a special day when companies and individuals come together to complete projects that benefit people within the community.

Etta Mae West

Etta Mae West, 78, of Borger, passed away, Thursday, April 12, 2012.
Etta Mae (Smith) West was born January 21, 1934 in Stillwell, OK to Maniard and Jessie (Cole) Smith. She was a homemaker. Etta Mae married Lloyd Lavon West on December 15, 1951.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Linda Davis; her son, Steve; and her brother, Woodrow.

FPC Plainsmen and Lady Plainsmen in action in Borger this weekend

After a couple of road trips, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen (14-20) baseball team and the Lady Plainsmen (10-27) softball team will be in WJCAC action this weekend in Borger,
The Plainsmen begin a four game series with the Clarendon College Bulldogs (19-9) on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
The Plainsmen have looked good the past two weeks with a 5-3 record against NMMI and El Paso CC to improve their conference record to 8-8.

Comanche athletes advance to 1A Regional Track Meet

On Tuesday, the West Texas High Comanches and Lady Comanches track teams made a strong showing at the 1A Area Meet in Panhandle.
In the boys side, West Texas High senior Colin Coleman took first place in the long jump with a 21-71/4 mark, while senior Alex Ramirez qualified for the regional meet by finishing in fourth place in the triple jump.
The West Texas boys 400m relay team advanced to regionals by coming in first place with a time of 45.00.
The Lady Comanches finished in fourth place overall in the 1A Area meet and will send several athletes to the regional meet.

The Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker in overtime 42-35. See weekend sports for full results.
