A grass fire broke out in the Electric City area on Friday afternoon.
On Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at 1:10 p.m., a grass fire occurred in the bed of the Canadian River at Electric City. The fire resulted in damage to 50 acres. According to Borger Fire Marshal Jerry Langwell, the fire occurred due to electrical power lines.
Borger, Hutchinson County, Fritch, Stinnett, and Crutch Ranch Fire Departments responded to the scene. No injuries were reported. All fire departments left the scene around 6:30 p.m.
Despite winning their first two tournament games by a combined score of 31-0, the Borger Lady Bulldogs knew they would face a tough challenge in the championship game of the Sanford-Fritch “Ducks on the Pond” Softball Tournament against district foes Dalhart.
The Lady Bulldogs didn’t keep the Lady Wolves scoreless, but the team continued to have hot bats at the plate by winning the tournament title with a 19-10 win.
The game was a close battle until the Lady Bulldogs found their groove at the plate and started pulling away at the end of the game.
The Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen softball team had a busy weekend competing in eight games over three days at the Murray State Festival in Tishomingo, Okla.
Over the three days, the Lady Plainsmen posted a 3-5 record.

The Lady Plainsmen bested Rose State College 5-1 in seven innings on Friday as Janelle Smith hit a home run and drove in two runners.
Ashley Abair was a workhorse on the rubber, pitching seven innings and allowed no earned runs, four hits and no walks while striking out five.
