Lady Eagles open District 1-2A play with win over Childress

On Friday evening, the Sanford-Fritch Lady Eagles hosted the Childress Lady Cats for the first District 1-2A matchup of the season.
The game began with the Lady Eagles applying full court pressure to rattle up Childress.
Big plays and defensive stops by the Lady Eagles kept them ahead at end of quarter one 8-6.
The second quarter showed what the Lady eagles have been doing the last few weeks.
They are running the court, playing great defense and dominating the inside.

Gruver tops West Texas High in district opener

On Friday evening, the West Texas High Lady Comanches did a pretty good job on the defensive end in their District 1-1A opener against the #8 state ranked Gruver Lady Greyhounds in Gruver.
Unfortunately, 22 turnovers and struggles on the offensive end by the Lady Comanches gave the Lady Greyhounds to opportunity to pull away in the second half on their way to the 50-15 win.
In the first period, the Lady Comanches did a good job applying defensive pressure which limited Gruver’s scoring opportunities early in the game.

Christmas Spirit home of Hutchinson County

Throughout December, the Borger News Herald held an online photo contest on which house in Hutchinson County displayed the most Christmas Spirit.
This year, the people throughout the county did a great job decorating their homes showing that the Christmas Spirit was alive and well in Hutchinson County.
With over 400 votes cast, the winner of this year's contest with 140 votes was located at 208 Cimarron in Borger.
Look for a new photo contest on the Borger News Herald website later in January.

Plainsmen begin second half of season vs Clarendon College

After a month off for the Christmas break, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen men’s basketball team will return to the court tomorrow afternoon hosting Clarendon College at 4:00 p.m. at the BCAC.
The first half of the season saw the Plainsmen post a 6-8 overall record with the team going 3-3 in their last six games before the Christmas break.
Despite having an under .500 record, the Plainsmen have been outscoring their opponents in averaging 77 points per game and giving up just 73 points per game.

Local hoop teams in action tonight

Tonight five Hutchinson County high school varsity basketball teams will be in action, with the Sanford-Fritch Lady Eagles and West Texas High Lady Comanches opening district play.
The Lady Eagles will open District 1-2A play hosting Childress with tip off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Sanford-Fritch High School.
The Lady Eagles have looked good in their past couple of games and appear to have a team capable of claiming one of the district’s playoff berths and competing with Spearman for the district title.

Melanie Gayle Whitten, 46, lost her long, hard fought battle with breast cancer and passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012 in Amarillo, TX. She went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born February 18, 1965. She is survived by her four children. 2 sons, Jimmy Koch of the U.S Marines, Ryan Koch of Woodward, Ok and 2 daughters, Tiffany M. McDonald of Borger, TX and Jessica K. Thompson of El Reno, Ok.

Andrew Devon Howell

Funeral services for Andrew Devon Howell, 26, of Fritch will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at Grace Church with Associate Pastor Tim Hall officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. Andrew died Wednesday January 4, 2012 in Fritch.

HCUW to offer community focus grants

The Hutchinson County United Way is offering community focus grants to non-profit organizations.
HCUW is now accepting applications for this program. Any 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that is not currently a United Way Program Provider may apply for funding.
In July of 2010, HCUW gave community focus grants to the Borger Satellite Workshop, The Bridge, Buttercup House, Eastern TX Panhandle Red Cross, Golden Spread Council (Boy Scouts), High Plains Helping Hand, HC Child Welfare Board, and Stinnett Little League.
