Electrical fire under investigation by officials

December 20, 2012

The Borger Fire Department and Xcel Energy responded to a fire at an electrical substation on Spring Creek Road early Wednesday morning that was caused by a possible intrusion, resulting in electricity going out for several Borger residents.
Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards said the call came in at 3:55 a.m. Wednesday.
The fire resulted in a power outage on the east side of Borger, and power was out for approximately two hours.

Students at BMS give back this holiday season

December 19, 2012

Students at Borger Middle School decided to give back this holiday season.
The BMS National Junior Honor Society and Student Council presented over 200 toys to the Golden Plains Community Hospital worth over $700 on Monday. The toys included things like headphones, CDs, handheld games for older kids, stuffed animals, cars, Barbies, dolls, legos, etc., for smaller children.

BHS senior Ben Sharp receives great honor

The Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) and the United States Marine Corp proudly announce the THSCA Academic All-State football team for 2012-13. The team is selected by a point system that awards points for GPA, class rank, and SAT or ACT score. The student/athletes are then placed on a team according to the number of points they have earned.
Borger High School senior, Ben Sharp, has been recognized by the state for his performance on the field and in the classroom. Sharp was selected to the Elite THSCA Academic All-State football team, the state's highest honor.

Eagles dominate White Deer in rematch

The Sanford Fritch teams met up with White Deer for the second time this season. The first round was a wild one, and the second matchup did not disappoint either. Both games were very physical, and a total of five technicals were called between the two games.
The Lady Eagles won the first contest between these teams easily, and did so again on Tuesday night. Fritch ended the 1st quarter with a three pointer from Meek at the buzzer to go up 21-6, and ended the half up 29-13.

WTHS seniors receive Academic All-State honors

Five West Texas High seniors have been selected to the Academic All-State team for the 2012 volleyball season. Not only do they exhibit talent on the court, they also strive for excellence in the classroom.
The Texas Girls Coaches Association selects the girls from all conferences. They must be seniors, have a GPA of 94 or above for grades 9-11, and must be a team member in good standing to qualify. The athletes are nominated by their varsity coaches. Varsity coaches must be a member of TGCA by November 1st for their athletes to be eligible for the honor.

Doomsday: Is it coming?

Doomsday may be just around the corner.
The “doomsayers” are worried because the 13th bak’tun (or 144,000-day cycle) of the Mayan Long Count calendar wraps up on Dec. 21, marking the end of a cycle of creation.
The Borger News-Herald asked its Facebook readers if they thought the world was going to end this week and if so what they would do on their last day on earth. Their response was as follows:
Mari Anne Hadley Swain said, “No, I believe the Lord is not short of His word. No one, not even Jesus, knows the time or day.”

Safety a top priority for county schools

A school shooting in Connecticut has made parents more aware of what goes on in the schools their children attend everyday.
Hutchinson County superintendents are here to put parents at ease during these hard times and explain what steps they take to secure their school.

Falcons too much for Bulldogs

December 17, 2012

urnovers were the story of the night for the Borger teams, who all fell to the Bushland Falcons on Friday night.
The Lady Bulldogs got off to a slow start, trading turnovers with Bushland. There was no scoring nearly three minutes into the game, when Prater and Urquidi had a field goal a piece. N. Embers scored the next four, and Loftis played aggressive defense and came up with a steal. N. Embers hits another three, and the Lady Dogs were enjoying an 11-5 lead. Bushland fought back in it and hit another three of their own to go up 12-11 after one quarter.

Jeffrey Scott Kay, 58, of Borger died Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, in Amarillo.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at the Minton Memorial Chapel with Pastor Blain Shelton of Grace Church officiating. Viewing will be Monday and Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

B.F. “Ben” Nall

Paradise- B.F. “Ben” Nall, 83, a retired district welder, went to be with our Lord Thursday, December 13, 2012 in Paradise.
Funeral is 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 15th at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Bridgeport with burial in Cottondale Cemetery. No set visitation.
Rev. David George will officiate. Pallbearers include Carey Davis, Erik Larsen, Shawn Dockum, Brad Hayhurst, Dustin Hayhurst, and Brandon Simpson. Honorary pallbearers are the men of Cottondale Church of Christ.
