Tommy Lewis

Tommy Lewis, 47, of Stinnett, passed away, Monday, September 5, 2011.
Tommy Lynn Lewis Jr. was born Wednesday, September 11, 1963 in Borger, TX to Tommy and Margie (Yake) Lewis. He was a carpet layer.
He is preceded in death by his father, Tommy Lewis Sr.; his grandmother, Mary Yake and his grandfather Raymond Lewis.
Survivors include his mother, Margie Lewis of Stinnett, TX; his sister, Tammy Young of Stinnett, TX; his nephew, Chad Young of Stinnett, TX; and special friend, Christie Patillo and her two daughters, Brittany and Briana.

9/11 memorial service to be held at Huber Park

With the tenth anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, quickly approaching, a memorial service to be held in Borger is in the works.
The service is being coordinated by the Borger Area Emergency Services Honor Guard with help from the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Borger Complex Honor Guard.
It will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011.
Bob Tiffany, who is a member of the Borger Area Emergency Services Honor Guard, said the service will be held at the site in Huber Park where the 9/11 memorial currently in the works will be constructed.

Patriotism the theme for 2011 Howdy Neighbor Day

Patriotism is the theme for this year’s Howdy Neighbor Day in Fritch.
The annual event is set to be held Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, in the Fritch City Park. A parade will kick off this year’s activities. Beginning at 10 a.m., floats, decorated vehicles, golf carts, wagons, bicycles, cars, and tractors will proceed from the Fritch Post Office area down Broadway to the Fritch City Park.

Local youth bowlers take first place in state tournament

Back in June, 31 local youth bowlers traveled to Dallas to take part in the state bowling tournament. Several of the bowlers made great showings including five taking first place in their divisions.
Pictured are the first place winners: (Back l to r) Casey Taylor, Camren Witt, Josh Howell (Front l to r) Kaisha Wortham, and Ashley Henderson. Each of the bowlers received a $125 scholarship.
It is time for the Borger youth league to start up again. Sign ups will take place on September 10th from 10:00 a.m.-noon at Wildcatters and the league will start on September 17th at 10:00 a.m.

Area runners take part in Borger Invitational

On Saturday, the 2011 high school and middle school cross country season got underway at Bulldog Stadium with nearly 600 runners taking part in the Borger Invitational.

Lady Plainsmen make strong showing in Oklahoma

Over the weekend, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen improved to 6-2 on the season after posting a 3-1 record at the Redlands CC Volleyball Tournament in El Reno, Okla.
On Friday, the Lady Plainsmen opened the tournament defeating Oklahoma Baptist University JV in straight sets 25-16, 26-24, 25-22. In their final match on Friday, the Lady Plainsmen fell to Seminole State 12-25, 22-25, 22-25.

Council to hear 2011-2012 budget

The Borger City Council is set to hear the 2011-12 budget at its upcoming meeting.
The budget will be presented during the council’s regular meeting at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, in the city council chambers of Borger City Hall, 600 North Main.
The council will conduct a public hearing to allow for citizen comment on the proposed FY 2011-12 budget and consider the introduction of an ordinance making appropriations in support of the general operation of the City of Borger for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, 2011.

Comanches shut out Shamrock to remain undefeated

Just as West Texas Comanche football fans were celebrating a 48-0 halftime lead, they were also reminded of how dangerous the game of football really is. Shamrock quarterback, Tyler Whiteley was airlifted from the field after being knocked unconscious just before the half. Reports from friends after the game say he has a concussion but should recover. Both teams were a little flat after the half.

Sunray pulls away to defeat Sanford-Fritch 47-24

SUNRAY-On Friday night, the Sunray Bobcats used three second half touchdowns to pull away for the 47-24 win over the Sanford-Fritch Eagles.
After a Colton Valle touchdown run for the Eagles at the 8:55 mark of the third quarter, the Eagles offense struggled to get much going into the second half, while the Bobcats’ running game controlled the clock.
Bobcats’ senior quarterback Talon Dooley had a big night connecting 11 of 18 passed for one touchdown and rushing for 141 yards that included a 98 yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Blanche M. Miller, 100, of Amarillo died on Wednesday, August 31, 2011.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 5, 2011 at the Park Place Towers Parlor with Jerry Bell officiating. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma with Nathan Mattox officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
