John Whitfield

John Whitfield, 57, of Fritch, passed away, Sunday, June 12, 2011.
John Whitfield was born Friday, May 7, 1954 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Billy Joe and Patricia (Caldwell) Whitfield. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Stinnett and a member of the Meredith Gun Club & the NRA.
He is preceded in death by his father and a brother Steven Michael Whitfield
Survivors include his mother, Pat; 2 daughters, Jessica Garrett & Lance, Macheal Leasure & Brandon; 2 sons, Marc Blackwell, Ty Whitfield; 2 brothers, Darryll Whitfield, Joey Whitfield and 8 grandchildren.

Coffer takes second in Junior Golf Tourney

Back on June 6th, Borger golfer Dylan Coffer took second place in the Ryan Palmer Foundation Junior Classic at the Tascosa Country Club in Amarillo.
In the 15-16 year old division, Coffer shot a 79 that tied him for first place, leading to a scorecard playoff where Coffer finished in second place.
The event was a Northern Texas PGA Junior Golf Tournament.

David A. Parker, 65, died Sunday, June 12, 2011, in Amarillo.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Borger. Interment will be at Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

City of Borger has record breaking temperature

With hot weather continuing to be a constant in the area, the City of Borger saw a record-breaking temperature Monday.
The report from the National Weather Service was a temperature of 108 degrees, which breaks the previous record of 103 degrees, set back in 1958.
Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards said he has been baffled by the recent conditions in the area.
“It has been strange weather that we’ve been having,” he said.

Local residents encouraged to practice fire safety

Local residents are encouraged to practice fire safety and abide by policies that have been set in place to do just that.
Last week, Hutchinson County Judge Faye Blanks issued a Declaration of Disaster that prohibits the sale or use of fireworks. This disaster declaration was signed and approved by Texas Governor Perry Friday, and will be in effect until 7 a.m. July 5, 2011.

Herbert “Pete” Collins

Herbert “Pete” Collins, 83, of Borger, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2011.
Herbert Glen “Pete” Collins was born Sunday, December 11, 1927 in Clarita, OK to James and Martha (Caine) Collins. He married Daphine Griffin on July 8, 1949 in Coalgate, OK. He was the owner of Collins Well Service. He served his country in WWII as a member of the United States Navy.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Edward Lewis “Eddie” Collins; and ten siblings.

Clair Lusk

Clair Lusk, 86, of Borger, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2011.
Clair Pauline (Lacefield) Lusk was born Friday, June, 5, 1925 in Hancock County, Kentucky to John and Callie (Phillips) Lacefield. She was a homemaker and volunteered for the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Billy Ray Lusk; a granddaughter, Leann Vaughn in 1995 and 12 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include two sons, Vaughn Lusk and wife Kaci of Borger, TX and Rodney Vaughn and wife Teri of Borger, TX; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren,

R.S. “Sid” Newberry

R.S. “Sid” Newberry, 86, of Fritch, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2011.
Raymond Sidney Newberry was born Tuesday, January 1, 1925 in Denoya, OK to Homer and Lillie (Meier) Newberry. He married Ada Stringer on October 9, 1945 in Borger, TX. Before retiring, he was a heavy equipment operator for Natural Gas Pipeline. He served his country in the US Army as a private during WWII.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother Marrion Newberry.

Denver Cornelius

Denver Cornelius, 85, of Borger, passed away Sunday June 12, 2011.
Denver Cornelius, Jr. was born August 13, 1925, to Denver & Carrie (Scott) Cornelius in Franklin, TX. He was a printer by trade. He married Kathleen Garrett in 1949.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Orvill Cornelius of Borger, 2 sisters, Evelyn Ricks of Huntsville and Sara Salter of Gladewater.
