Three former Plainsmen go in the MLB Draft

June 9, 2011

This week will go down as one of pride for the Frank Phillips College Baseball program, as three former Plainsmen were drafted in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft.
Former Plainsmen outfielder Chris Grayson was drafted in the 13th round with the 414th overall pick by the Texas Rangers after posting a .364 batting average with 51 RBIs during the 2011 season at Lee University in Tennessee.
Grayson’s teammate, and former Plainsmen, outfielder Jonathan Clark would go in the 17th round, at the 522nd pick, to the New York Mets.

Maurine Brown

Maurine Brown, 93, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 08, 2011.
Maurine (Haney) Brown was born Tuesday, March 26, 1918 in Burleson, TX to Homer & Lela (Norwood) Haney. Mrs. Brown, along with her husband, Thomas Everett (Tom) Brown were charter members of Bunavista Baptist Church where she remained a member. She and her husband were directors of the Young Peoples Department for more than twenty-five years. She was a Sunday School teacher, G.A. teacher, played the piano for church and was a member of the church choir.

Relay for Life kicks off Friday evening

It is almost time to Relay!
The annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Hutchinson County kicks off Friday, June 10, at 7 p.m. and will run through 7 a.m. Saturday, June 11. The event will be held at Huber Park in Borger.
This year’s relay will be a celebration of cancer survivorship, and is a way to raise much-needed funds to help find a cure for cancer and funding programs that assist those in Hutchinson County suffering from the disease.

DPS striving to keep community safe

One of the goals of the local branch of the Texas Department of Public Safety is to ensure the safety of the community it serves.
Sgt. Joe Medrano of the DPS, along with Troopers Casey Dawson and Oscar Esqueda, attended the Tuesday meeting of the Rotary Club to share more about the work that is done by the department.
Medrano said he has been a Hutchinson County resident for 11 years. Initially, he said he didn’t think he would be here very long, but truly enjoys living here and being a part of the community, as well as those with whom he works.

Former Bulldogs Garcia and Irwin take part in baseball all-star game

Back on Sunday, June 5, 2011 Borger graduates Brandon Garcia and Garrett Irwin participated in the Greater West Texas Baseball Coaches Association All Star Game held at Lubbock Cooper Field.
The game combined Class 3A and 4A players from the Panhandle area along with players from schools throughout West Texas to the Midland area.
Playing for the East team, Garcia went 2 for 2 at the plate with 1 single, 1 double and 3 RBI’s and Irwin went 3 for 3 at the plate with one single, two doubles and 1 RBI.
Garcia and Irwin combined for 5 of the East squad’s total 11 hits.
