West Texas High Cheerleaders making one girl’s dream come true

One dream many young girls share is picturing themselves down the road being able to walk along the track of the football field getting their team’s fans fired up by performing the various cheers and dance routines as a member of the high school cheerleading squad.
Ten year old Elvira Carrales of Amarillo shares that same dream of being able to get a crowd pumped up by being a cheerleader.

Cyclists gear up for Bike MS: Wild West Ride 2011

Texas Panhandle residents will pedal toward a world free of multiple sclerosis during Bike MS: The Wild West Ride 2011, presented by BP on Saturday and Sunday, July 16-17.
The race is aiming to raise $100,000 to fund multiple sclerosis research, along with programs and services for more than 56,000 Texans served by the National MS Society.
The annual two-day fundraising ride is fully-supported and features a scenic route from Amarillo to Canadian.

Capt. Douglas Moody Smith, USMCR (retired)

Capt. Douglas M. Smith, 86, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011 in Amarillo.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Panhandle, where Mr. Smith was a Deacon Emeritus. Rev. Bill Austin will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle.
Douglas was born July 15, 1924, to Blanch Ems Smith and Dwight Moody Smith on the Ems farm outside of Lubbock.

VFW Post 1789 gets new sign

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1789 on Main Street officially has a new sign!
In early April, the old sign on the VFW building was removed so it could be replaced it with a new electronic sign from Sign Tronix in California.
Joe Nivens of the VFW said that it took about two and a half months just to find someone interested in putting the sign up on the building. D.E. Rice Construction worked to get the sign hung on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
