Herbert “Pete” Collins

Herbert “Pete” Collins, 83, of Borger, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2011.
Herbert Glen “Pete” Collins was born Sunday, December 11, 1927 in Clarita, OK to James and Martha (Caine) Collins. He married Daphine Griffin on July 8, 1949 in Coalgate, OK. He was the owner of Collins Well Service. He served his country in WWII as a member of the United States Navy.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Edward Lewis “Eddie” Collins; and ten siblings.

Clair Lusk

Clair Lusk, 86, of Borger, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2011.
Clair Pauline (Lacefield) Lusk was born Friday, June, 5, 1925 in Hancock County, Kentucky to John and Callie (Phillips) Lacefield. She was a homemaker and volunteered for the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Billy Ray Lusk; a granddaughter, Leann Vaughn in 1995 and 12 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include two sons, Vaughn Lusk and wife Kaci of Borger, TX and Rodney Vaughn and wife Teri of Borger, TX; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren,

R.S. “Sid” Newberry

R.S. “Sid” Newberry, 86, of Fritch, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2011.
Raymond Sidney Newberry was born Tuesday, January 1, 1925 in Denoya, OK to Homer and Lillie (Meier) Newberry. He married Ada Stringer on October 9, 1945 in Borger, TX. Before retiring, he was a heavy equipment operator for Natural Gas Pipeline. He served his country in the US Army as a private during WWII.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother Marrion Newberry.

Denver Cornelius

Denver Cornelius, 85, of Borger, passed away Sunday June 12, 2011.
Denver Cornelius, Jr. was born August 13, 1925, to Denver & Carrie (Scott) Cornelius in Franklin, TX. He was a printer by trade. He married Kathleen Garrett in 1949.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Orvill Cornelius of Borger, 2 sisters, Evelyn Ricks of Huntsville and Sara Salter of Gladewater.

Anna “Ann” Marie Looten Lindsey

PANHANDLE - Anna “Ann” Marie Looten Lindsey, 84, died Saturday, June 11, 2011, in Amarillo.
Rosary Service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church and funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Panhandle with Father Mieczyslaw Przepiora officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Groom under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle.

BISD board approves action on personnel

The Borger ISD board of trustees acted on personnel matters during its regular meeting Tuesday.
Probationary 10 month contracts were approved for Kristina Brittain and Tia Speed. Brittain, who has been working as a part-time science teacher at Gateway Elementary, will now be teaching full-time there. Speed will be coming to Borger ISD as a teacher at Borger Intermediate School.
The board also approved action on a term contract of 10 months for Donna Hertel. Hertel, who has been a math teacher at Borger High School, will be moving to Borger Middle School to teach the same subject.

Local officers go bald for one of their own

Deputies from the Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office, along with officers from the Department of Public Safety and the Borger Police Department went bald for one of their own on Saturday. These officers shaved their heads on Saturday on behalf of Ruth Frederick, an office secretary for the HCSO.
Frederick, who has worked for the office for more than 20 years, was diagnosed with breast cancer and begins her chemotherapy this week.
The event took place this past Saturday at W&S Day Spa. Chief Deputy James Qualls stated that the officers wanted Frederick to know they were in her corner.

Stinnett school board, city council to meet tonight

Two government entities will be meeting in Stinnett this evening.
The PSPCISD board of trustees will meet tonight in the board conference room at 7 p.m. The board will take a tour of summer projects at West Texas Elementary, and then will go over Policy Update 90 affecting local policies. They will consider or approve a policy statement for free reduced priced meals, and the employment of the West Texas Elementary Principal, along with student extra curricular insurance. The board then will review all old agenda items.

Wal-Mart Children’s Miracle Network Softball Tournament winners

On Saturday, several teams came out to take part in the Wal-Mart sponsored Children’s Miracle Softball Tournament held out in Frtich.
The proceeds raised from the tournament will support the Borger Wal-Mart’s efforts to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network campaign.

“We Beat the Men” take first in United Way Tournament

June 13, 2011

On Saturday, over 40 local golfers paired up into 12 golf teams to take part in the Hutchinson County United Way Golf Scramble at the Phillips Golf Course.
Each of the 12 teams posted impressive scores with the winning team “We Beat the Men” coming out on top with a score of 56.

Proceeds from Saturday’s tournament went to benefit the Hutchinson County United Way.
