From the fresh cut grass to the smell of hot dogs and popcorn in the air, perhaps one of the best days on the sports calendar every year, for many sports fans, is getting out for opening day of the baseball season.
Unfortunately in 2009, opening day for the Amarillo Dillas will go down as one of the most tragic days in sports history in the Texas Panhandle with the passing of Dillas Public Announcer Joe Frank Wheeler just hours before the game.
The Hutchinson County United Way is making plans for its upcoming Day of Caring, and is currently seeking ways in which it can help out the community.
This year’s event is set for Sept. 17, 2011. According to Teri Hogue of the HCUW, the event truly has a “neighbor helping neighbor” focus.
“The Day of Caring is a day when volunteers choose to give their time and services to work on a one-time service project in an effort to impact our community’s needs with tasks that they are unable to perform themselves,” she said.
On Friday night cancer survivors, family members, local organizations and businesses along with community supporters throughout Hutchinson County came out to Huber Park to take part in the 2011 American Cancer Society “Relay For Life”.
