FPC’s Smith earns All-Conference and All-Region honors

After an impressive freshman softball season, Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen outfielder Janelle Smith was named to the First Team WJCAC All-Conference and the Region V All-Region teams for the 2011 season.
Smith posted a .353 overall batting average, including a .385 mark in conference play, along with 41 hits, 21 runs, seven doubles, two homeruns and 20 RBIs.

Wal-Mart sponsoring Co-Ed Softball Tourney for Children’s Miracle Network

The Wal-Mart location in Borger is holding a Co-Ed Softball Tournament at the Sanford-Fritch High School Fields on Saturday, June 11th.
The entry fee is $15 per player and there is a 15 player maximum per roster.
The proceeds raised from the tournament will support the Borger Wal-Mart’s efforts to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network campaign.

West Texas Comanches Special Olympic team enjoys spring events

Back on April 16th, the West Texas Comanches Special Olympics team hosted its first ever Special Olympic track meet at Comanche Stadium in Stinnett.
Over 400 athletes, coaches and volunteers helped run the track meet and the West Texas Comanche team would like to thank everyone that sponsored the meet.
The team would also like to thank local law officials for their help in the torch run, leading to nothing but great words being said about the local meet with every visiting team being very impressed.

Borger linebacker McKinney starting to attract D1 attention

With nearly 30 players being replaced due to graduation, the Borger Bulldog football team will be one that will have several new faces at the varsity level when it opens the 2011 season with the Canyon Randall Raiders at Bulldog Stadium on August 26.
However, the team will return several outstanding players from this year’s squad, with a couple already attracting the attention of some colleges around the country.

Frank Phillips College suspends men’s golf program

During the May FPC Board of Regents meeting, FPC President Dr. Jud Hicks told the board that the college has decided to suspend the Plainsmen Golf program starting this fall.
This spring, the FPC Golf program was placed on probation by the NJCAA for exceeding the number of scholarships provided to non-U.S. resident students and number of athletes being provided with financial aid.
In talking with Dr. Hicks on Tuesday morning, the college had learned back in December that the golf program had exceeded both numbers, leading the college to turn themselves into the NJCAA.

E.W. “Runt” Vassar

E. W. “Runt” Vassar, 81, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011, in Amarillo.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Fellowship Church with George Young, son-in-law and Rev. Tim Hall, assistant pastor, officiating. Interment will be in “The Garden of Beatitudes” at Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Mr. Vassar was born on June 9, 1929. He married Elba Simpson on July 28, 1951, in Cushing, Okla. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a supervisor at Phillips Refinery.

Borger acting to keep citizens safe from wildfire

With the windy weather and the threat of wildfire a constant in this region of Texas, local firefighters have been working hard to be sure this threat doesn’t reach Borger.
The City of Borger has been using Firewise principles as a means of keeping its citizens safe from the threat of wildfire. Such principles have been the use of native plants for landscaping and the thinning of vegetation, which have made a significant difference in its ability to fight wildfires.

Birds making Lake Marina their home

Even though the Lake Meredith Marina closed to the public during the first part of the year, apparently a large group of birds didn’t receive the memo and are using the area as their current home.
According to Arlene Wimer, Chief of Resource Management of Lake Meredith National Recreation Area and Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, a large number of swallows are nesting on the two-story structure at the marina.

Elks holding Memorial Day services

The Borger Elks Lodge will be holding Memorial Day services for all branches of military services on May 30, 2011. Stops will be at Westlawn Cemetery at 9 a.m., Highland Park Cemetery at 10 a.m., Stinnett Cemetery at 11 a.m., and Lieb Cemetery at 12 p.m. The services will consist of a bagpipe player playing “TAPS” and “Amazing Grace” while someone sings at each stop.

Dylan Winkle receives T.E. Ward Award

On Tuesday evening, Borger High School senior Dylan Winkle was selected as the 2010-11 recipient of the T.E. Ward Award.
Qualifications to be nominated for the award include being an outstanding senior male athlete, exemplify the highest moral character, behavior and leadership; regulate his actions at all times so that he will be a credit to the team, school, and community; and display good sportsmanship at all times by being modest in victory and gracious in defeat.
